Shipping of Biohazardous Materials:

All applicable regulations must be adhered to for shipping materials to Cogenics.  Cogenics must be notified prior to any biohazardous shipments being sent.

International shipment of all etiological agents and other biohazardous materials to the USA is subject to the guidelines below:

For volume less than 50 mls, insert the primary specimen in a container that has enough absorbent material to contain a spill. This must be UN 6.2 (United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods) approved if the material is infectious or likely to be infectious. UN6.2 containers are available through hazardous material suppliers.
Insert this container in a second container that is labeled with the sender's name, address, and telephone number. This must be UN 6.2 approved if the material is infectious or likely to be infectious.
Insert the two nested containers in a third shipping container that is labeled with the sender's name, address, and telephone number. Also include a BIOHAZARD label.
A USA permit or authorization letter will be obtained by Cogenics for shipment. Cogenics maintains import permits for a variety of materials.  Additional import permits will be obtained as necessary; the permit application process usually takes 2-4 weeks. One permit may be valid for multiple shipments if requested up front. These multiple importation permits are valid for one year. An authorization letter will be obtained by Cogenics in cases where material is known to be non-infectious. The letter is valid for 2 years. In order to apply for either a permit or an authorization letter, Cogenics needs the following information:

° Complete name and address of sender
°

Description of material including name, original geographic and host source and culture history of agent or vector.

°

Quantity of material plus type of individual containers

If the material is is infectious or likely to be infectious, the IATA/ICAO guidelines must be followed.
Shipping of agricultural pests or agricultural infectious agents requires a USDA permit.

Additional shipping information can be obtained by contacting Cogenics.
